A Unique Family Collection
SOTHEBYS.COM.auction#.....

Sotheby’s, New York - The iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, an idolized and idealized celebrity from an unforgettable era, has remained distinct from the memory of Norma Jeane Baker, the person who became Marilyn after arriving in Hollywood.
......From February 8th through March 1st, 2001 SOTHEBYS.COM will be hosting a very unique offering: The Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe: The Berniece and Mona Miracle Collection, which is comprised of gifts and special mementos given by Marilyn Monroe to her half-sister, Berniece Miracle, who remained one of Marilyn’s best-kept secrets.
......“To see the evolution from Norma Jeane to Marilyn through rare, intimate letters and photographs make this an incredibly personal and significant collection”, commented Leila Dunbar, Sotheby’s Senior Vice President/Director of Collectibles.............photos(c)2001.Sothebys

......When she was an 18 year-old girl, Norma Jeane Baker learned that she had a half sister, Berniece Miracle, then 26. The news of each other’s identity came out of the midst of their emptiness, having been abandoned fifteen years earlier by their mother who would spend the remainder of much of her life in a mental institution. It was at this time in 1944 that Norma Jeane Baker and Berniece Miracle met, forging a special bond as sisters that would last until Marilyn’s untimely and sudden death.

......The Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe: The Berniece and Mona Miracle Collection began with the Miracle’s collecting Marilyn’s department store ads from Los Angeles newspapers and magazines like Time, Life and Vogue. Through the years the collection grew to include gifts that Marilyn sent to her family, such as objects of clothing, photographs, letters, and special mementos.
